Humans

Humans are by far the most plentiful of the major races of the Known World. They are spread across the globe and have many distinct cultures. Humans come in all of the varieties seen on our Earth. They range from the Romanesque Thyatians to the Slavic Traladarans of Karameikos, from the Viking and Nordic Northlanders to the Mongols of Ethengar, and from the African like tribes of Tanagoro to the Native American like Atraughins and the Arabic Ylari. If it exists or existed on our world, it can probably be found in the Known World.

Subraces

Thyatians – Thyatian people are dark-haired, dark eyed, and olive-complexioned. They are noted for their sophistication, often called decadence by people from other lands, and their pragmatism, which often leads to treachery in negotiations. More than anything else citizens of the Empire admire fighting ability. Warfare dominates their arts and entertainment: the best loved sculpture, stage plays, and poems deal with martial themes. Thyatians pride themselves on their efficiency and discipline. They believe they are not conquering the world but civilizing it and they enrich themselves by absorbing all the traits of all the races of the Empire. Thyatians are a similar build to Hattians but usually have a more prominent nose. Kerendans tend to be the same but slightly taller.

Hattians – These people have light olive skin, light to dark brown hair or black; eyes that are usually blue, grey, or brown. They tend to be average height and solid build; wide brow and heavy facial bone structure are common. They believe they are the greatest race ever. For most Hattians, a promise to a lesser race is not truly a promise and Hattian blood must stay pure if the race is to stay strong.

Alasiyans – These people have dusky skin tone, hair that is usually black or dark brown, eyes that are usually dark brown sometimes black or light brown. They are range from average height to slightly taller. They are similar to the Arabs/Moors of the Magreb (Northern Africa) in our world. Many Alasiyans believe that women should not adventure or hold leadership positions. They also believe that mastery of the weapon of diplomacy is the greatest weapon one can possess but a good scimitar in your hands helps.

Ochaleans – These people have coppery skin tone, hair ranging from golden brown to dark brown, seldom curly and almond shaped eyes of brown, amber, or gold. They are shorter than average height and built lean with fine facial features. They believe one should take pride only in the work he does for family and city; only the fighter and cleric merit respect; women should not fight or adventure; the law ensures fairness for all and the individual exists to serve the community.

Nuari (Pearl Islanders) – These people have black or deep brown skin tone and hair that is brown or black with eyes that are brown or black. They tend to be tall and lean with high cheekbones and fine bone structures. Many believe that the greatest honor comes from developing abilities and knowledge to the greatest possible heights; to steal is to diminish yourself. In the Islands, murder is a serious crime not because of the harm it does someone but because of the theft of something that is not the murderer’s: the life of the deceased.

Hinterlanders – These people have fair skin tone and hair that is light brown, blonde, or red with eyes that are blue or brown. They are average height to slightly under, men are often very stocky and muscular. They have square features, strong cheekbones, and strong bone structures. They believe to fight alone is to be a hero; to fight in formation is to be an ant; to fight from behind a wall is to be a turtle; the gods help those that help themselves; helping ones self to the goods of a fallen for (or the pouch of a unwitting one) is to capture a memento of your greatness or cleverness; live no part of you life in moderation.

Alphatians – These people have coppery skin tone and hair ranging from golden brown to dark brown or red, eyes range in color from brown, gold, green, hazel, and amber. They are tall and lean with delicate bones and facial features. They believe life is to be enjoyed; hard work is what you must endure so that the rest of your time may be spent in artistic and personal pursuits; the greater you are the more servants you may employ to do your work. Alphatians are not as quick to blend their race with others like the Thyatians. Alphatians tend to conquer other races and make them their servants.

Ylari – These people, the other major race of the Emirates of Ylaruam, have dark complexion, hair that is usually black or dark brown, eyes that are usually dark brown sometimes black or light brown. They are range from average height to slightly taller and have a lean build with sharp facial features. Men usually wear their hair pulled back and their head covered with a traditional headwrap called a keffiah. Many Ylari preach peace and politeness to others, yet can’t accept foreigners or their customs among them. Also, many are warriors who constantly raid other tribes, an act they find admirable despite their constant attempts to unite themselves. Their uncooperative behavior marks them for the barbarians they truly are. All are devout followers of the True Way, the philosophies given to them by their Immortal, al-Kalim. Any who do not worship al-Kalim are considered infidels, a crime now punishable by death within their borders. Even worse than being an infidel is being a mage, at least according to the Ylari.

Makai (Ierendi Islanders) – These people have always enjoyed a mild, sunny climate, and abundance of food with a minimum of work, and a slow easy pace of life. Makai are friendly and generous, always willing to help someone out. Of course, since most are also in the tourist business, they are also always ready to sell visitors to the islands worthless trinkets, Makai tribal good luck charms (which never really existed in their ancestral tribes), and anything else to make a silver piece. Makai are easily recognized thanks to their brown colored skin, dark hair and dark eyes. The Ierendians live by the money brought in from tourist, and they know it. That’s why they are always cheerful, happy, and helpful. When a foreigner is well treated and enjoys his stay, he’ll return and give them more money.

Minrothadians – These people have a fair complexion with wavy dark brown or black hair and green or brown eyes. A minority have red hair, resembling the Alphatians. These people are inquisitive and energetic. They love interaction with strangers and the challenge of working out an equitable deal in which each party benefits. They can be fast talkers who are sometimes openly quarrelsome.

Traladarans – These people are descendants of the native Traldar tribes of legend. They tend to be fairly small (men average 5’9”, women 5’3”) and light of build. They tend to have pale complexions, brown eyes, and dark hair (deep brown to black). In general, they are a very superstitious people. they are great believers in good luck charms, and omens and portents, curses and evil eyes. For the most part, Traladarans don’t care much for Thyatians. They see the Thyatians as the latest wave of bad luck which keeps the Traladarans from re-achieving their Golden Age. Since many of the original Thyatian arrivals were land grabbers many Traladarans see all Thyatians as being the same.

Northmen – These people have fair skin tone and hair that is light brown, blonde, or red with eyes that are blue or brown. They are average height to slightly taller, men are often very stocky and muscular. They have square features, strong cheekbones, and strong bone structures. Above anything, the Northmen honor bravery and scorn the weak. The civilized way of words used by the Thyatians and Minrothadians who visit their nation is dishonorable in their point of view. They fear nothing, not even the darkness of eternal death, and march off to battle foes even when hopelessly outnumbered. To a Northman, death in battle is the only method of finding happiness in the afterlife. They are quick to anger at any insult upon them, not just those toward their Gods. Battles to the death over a perceived wrong are commonplace here, and to be called a coward afraid to fight is the worse insult imaginable to them. They do not forgive easily, an enemy made is often for life. Of the three Northern Reaches nations, Ostland is still practicing pirating and raiding of foreign nations. And they do not deny it when accused either. They view such raids as tests of manhood, and that only the weak whine about their fate. To most, such plundering is violent and brutal, but to the Ostlanders, it is a way of life.

Ethengarians – These people are stout and yellow skinned with black straight hair and dark eyes with slight epicanthic folds to their eyes. They are nomads who move their herds of yaks, sheep, goats, pigs, and horses across the grassy plans. They live in yurts, a type of tent, and make no permanent communities. They are war-like who are proud of their ability as cavalrymen and archers. Normally they vent their warlike natures on one another. Sometimes, they are bound together by a great leader and threaten nations on all sides of them.

Glantrians – This population is made up of several different ethnic stocks, including elves, Flaemish Alphatians, Traladaran, Thyatians, Ethengarians, and others. The Flaemish have copper skin and hair ranging from golden brown to dark brown or red, eyes range in color from brown, gold, green, hazel, and amber. They are tall and lean with delicate bones and facial features.

Denagothians – The Denagothian human people are not really that much different from the goblinoids they live alongside. They are much stronger, tougher and more resistant to the harsh climate than the common Northmen (such as the inhabitants of Norwold or the Northern Reaches), yet their complexion is strangely darker, more similar to the Thyatian stock than to the classic Northmen. Also, a strange fire seem to burn in their eyes, a light that sometimes makes them look very similar to hairy humanoid brutes: it is suspected they actually accept the beast that dwells within them, instead of trying to dominate it like civilized people do. All considered, the Denagothians are a proud and fierce folk, much like the Heldanners to the east, but they somehow retain some physical and above all behavioral traits that always stress the link they still share with the animals (or even with the goblinoids). They live for the hunt and war, being the greatest of hunts, is highly regarded.

Heldanners – They are hardy and resourceful, never giving up on any task they set to heart. The fact that they manage to grow crops and even thrive in this harsh land is proof enough of this fact. Heldanner commoners are a tall, light-skinned people most likely related to the men of the Northern Reaches. They toil the fields and are at peace with themselves and the world. The majestic Heldannic Knights were once majority Hattians (from Thyatis), but now they are equally represented between Hattians/Thyatians and Heldanners.

Sindhi – The main human stock of Sind is a blend of Atruaghin and Urduk racial stocks, a combination which has resulted in the nut brown skin tone. The people of Jalawar, in particular, are a more reddish brown than most Sindhi, likely due to a greater Atruaghin influence based on their geographical location.

Atruaghins – Outland scholars have long divided the Children of Atruaghin (as they often refer to themselves) into five major cultural traditions – the Bear, Elk, Horse, Tiger, and Turtle clans – though such distinctions are broad generalizations that do not do these people justice. In any event, the Children themselves do not use such terms to identify themselves, and regard outlanders who do with amusement. The children of Atruaghin have a rough savage appearance to them much like the natives in other parts of the world. They have a reddish brown skin with either brown, hazel or dark green eyes. Their hair is either dark brown or black. Their clothing consists of skins from animals and plants of the areas in which they live ranging anything from deer and bear skins to light cotton clothing. Their favored weapons are spears, bows daggers and whips.

Wendarians – The Wendarians are no weak folk whatsoever. All are descended from the old Antalian stock, they are used to the cold and humid weather so common in this land (it snows and rains seven months a year). They appear to be a mix of Thyatian and Norsemen, being light as the Norsemen but with darker hair like the Thyatians.

Darokinians – Derogatorily termed the “Land of Leftovers” by outsiders, the Republic boasts one of the single most diverse populations of any nation in the Known World. Thyatians, Traladarans, Ylari, Alasiyans, Glantrians, elves, dwarves, Hin – all contribute to the long and rich cultural and racial history of the nation. The human stock of Darokin is a blend of different ethnicities. The average human here is fair complected with hair ranging from black, brown to blonde or red. Their eyes range in color from brown to blue or green and any combination in between. They are average build and height.
