Grand Duke Stefan Karameikos
King Stefan Karameikos is of late middle age. He is of average height (5’ 10” tall) but burly. His fiery red hair, beard, and moustache are flecked with grey, and his eyes are sea-blue.
Grand Duke Stefan Karameikos is a Thyatian who gained rulership over the nation in AC 970 by trading his ancestral lands, the Duchy of Machetos, to Emperor Thincol of Thyatis in exchange for autonomous rulership over the Imperial Province of Traladara. The history of the Grand Duke is tightly intertwined with the recent history of the land that bears his name. He is famous for saying, “There are no Thyatians here. There are no Traladarans. There are only citizens of Karameikos.” However, there are still deep divisions between the two peoples who make up the natives of the new nation.
While he enjoys the popular support of both Traladarans and Thyatians, there are well known flaws of the Grand Duke. For instance, a widely leaked memo written by the Ambassador from the Five Shires stated, “He wouldn’t recognize evil if it dressed in black robes, clutched a blood-stained dagger, and jumped onto his bed shouting, ‘I am darkness personified!’ A significant character flaw, even for a human.” Chief among his failures to recognize evil is his cousin, Baron Ludwig von Hendriks, ruler of the Black Eagle Barony.
Amongst some Traladarans, Stefan is seen as the second coming of King Halav. They note his stern personality, military prowess and dark red hair. The Cult of Halav is key to the spread of this idea and it actively seeks to convince others that the Duke will lead Traladara to a new era of power, influence and prosperity.
